How I built it
The journey from brief to production.
Brief
My Betting Mate is an Australian betting comparison platform dedicated to providing honest, unbiased reviews and insights for both major bookmakers and independent operators. I led the project end to end, creating a fast, intuitive experience that makes it easy for punters to explore, compare, and make informed betting decisions.
Wireframe & Design
I started with wireframes to plan the page structure and user flow, then worked with the design team to turn them into high-fidelity mockups in Figma. The final designs helped define the layout, components, and overall visual direction before development.
Build — Headless Approach
I took a headless approach, pairing GatsbyJS with a WordPress backend over WPGraphQL, giving content editors a familiar admin experience while the front-end shipped as its own decoupled, statically generated layer — every page pre-rendered at build time for fast load times and clean, crawlable HTML for SEO. Subscriber accounts were handled through the WordPress REST API with JWT authentication, so only signed-in users could reach their saved bets and tracking data while the rest of the site stayed fully static and public. The site also shipped as a PWA, so it could be installed and revisited quickly even on slower mobile connections.
Staging & Production
The project is hosted on Netlify with CI/CD wired up through Github, so every merge to staging and production automatically builds and deploys the latest version. That removed manual deployment steps and made releases predictable and low-risk.
